Abstract

Medieval Archaeology in Turkey is a discipline that has been on the rise in popularity in recent years. Excavation and field survey projects representing this period are largely implemented with a traditional archaeology approach, which is highly dependent on architectural documentation and typology of finds only. Considering the large number of current projects and the size of the collected data, and being conscious that archaeological excavation is a destruction and a place can be excavated only once, how sufficient are the applied practices and documentation methods? What is the spatial and contextual resolution of the data collected? Can they be re-studied by different researchers with new approaches and methods that will emerge in the future. Potential and quality of the knowledge produced is an important issue that should be questioned.

The lack of awareness of researchers on the current archaeological theory and methods limits the potential of the discipline, causes loss of scientific knowledge and puts the discipline in a vicious circle.

This article, being aware that the above-defined problematic is a common deficiency of the sub-disciplines that investigate all periods, discusses the state of the theory and methods, its development and reviews the sample applications limited to the Medieval Archaeology in Turkey. It aims to contribute to this field by determining the situation to raise awareness to break out of the vicious circle and produce more optimal and reliable scientific information, and prevent data loss. While the importance of archaeological theory and method can be concretized through many study subjects, this article addresses the problem with a case study through archaeobotanical and microdebris data in the context of Medieval Archaeology.
